Housing payments

How decisions are made

We look at:

• Your income, spending, and savings
• Your rent shortfall and why it exists
• What steps you are taking to improve your situation
• Your health, vulnerability, or risk of homelessness
• Whether the accommodation is affordable and suitable
• Available budget

How long awards last

Housing Payments are usually short term, often for 3–6 months. Sometimes awards may last longer in exceptional situations.

How payments are made

• Payments usually go directly to your landlord
• Sometimes they may be paid to you (for example, in benefit cap cases)

Backdating

Backdated payments are only considered if: 

• You could not apply earlier for serious, proven reasons (e.g., illness) 
• The Council gave incorrect advice 

Conditions you may need to meet

To receive or continue to receive help, you may be asked to:

• Work with debt advice or budgeting support
• Apply for all benefits you are entitled to
• Reduce non essential spending
• Look for cheaper accommodation (if appropriate)
• Engage with employment or income boosting support
• Work on reducing rent arrears

Failure to engage without good reason may affect future awards.
