Urban tree challenge
We are planting thousands of trees in Slough as part of the Urban Forest project. This is a scheme funded by us and the Forestry Commission.
Slough has the lowest level of tree canopy in Berkshire and is below the national minimum target of 20% tree cover. There are four Air Quality Management Areas identified in Slough where levels of nitrogen dioxide exceed the EU limit. Being chosen to be a part of this project gives a chance to:
- increase tree coverage in the borough
- meet the commitment of the council’s Five Year Plan to make Slough an attractive place to live, work and stay
- enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits trees bring and the impact they will have on air quality.
Throughout 2020 and 2021 over 9,000 trees will be planted across 31 sites in Slough. We will then track data on tree development through a network of sensors.
The main aim of this project is to:
- improve air quality
- improve carbon capture
- provide education and training opportunities
- increase biodiversity in your area.
The sites were identified using the funding guidelines given by DEFRA. The guidelines are based on local tree canopy cover, and statistics from the national indices of deprivation.
Current consultation
Some roads are near homes and parking spaces and are subject to public consultation.
Foxborough Labyrinth at Hawkers Hill
The team is working with Abri Housing to produce initial designs for a labyrinth planting effect with flowers and trees at Hawkers Hill behind Foxborough Primary School and Eden Close and the flats in Common Road. More details to follow.
