What is clinical waste

Clinical waste is waste produced from healthcare and similar activities, which unless rendered safe may prove hazardous to any person who comes into contact with it. Clinical waste is classified as the following:

  • human or animal tissue;
  • blood or bodily fluids;
  • human excretions;
  • drugs or other pharmaceutical products;
  • swabs or dressings;
  • syringes, needles or other sharp instruments;
  • any other waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice.

Clinical waste should never be disposed of in your grey refuse bin or your red recycling bin.
