If your relationship ends
If you separate from your partner and share a tenancy or own your home together, you may still have the right to stay in the property.
Your housing rights will depend on:
- whose name is on the tenancy agreement or mortgage
- whether the tenancy is joint or in one person’s name
- whether you own the property together
You can get independent advice about your housing rights from:
Shelter
- Guidance on joint tenancies and relationship breakdown
- The effect of relationship breakdown on tenancies and home ownership
Citizens Advice
- Advice on what to do if your ex-partner is trying to make you leave
- Sorting out your home when you separate
These organisations can explain your rights and the options available to you.
If you are worried about losing your home, contact the council as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation and possible housing options.
You could be waiting years to be made an offer for social housing.
Check the information on finding a home and consider your options before making a homelessness application.
