Repairing vehicles on the road

It is an offence for a business to carry out restricted works on a vehicle on a road. It is also an offence to carry out such works if it causes annoyance to persons in the vicinity.

Restricted works of a vehicle or any part of a vehicle include:

  • repair
  • maintenance
  • servicing
  • improvement
  • dismantling.

A person guilty of this offence can be prosecuted by the council and on conviction can be fined up to £2,500. The council may deal with the matter by issuing a £100 fixed penalty notice (£60 for early payment).

It's not intended to target those who carry out necessary work to vehicles by the side of the road after a breakdown or accident, so long as the work is done within 72 hours.
