Having fewer cars on the roads has perhaps been the single greatest positive effect of the lockdowns on the environment. Children are especially vulnerable to the impacts of breathing in polluted air. The traffic outside schools can make the air in their playground and classroom dangerous to breathe.
Slough Borough Council’s sustainable travel team, Better by is delighted to help promote active/sustainable travel during lockdown to Slough schools. Please note this home learning activity will count towards your Modeshift STARS activity card.
We are inviting pupils from years 3 to 5 from your school to enter a competition by creating a poster to help raise awareness about the positive effects of having fewer cars on the roads. The poster design needs to be focused around how pupils feel about seeing fewer cars on the roads, which results in many benefits. This can include a reduction in congestion, improvement in air quality and safer and healthier streets in Slough and the area in which they live.
Pupils can create their own template in the shape of a leaf. They then need to get creative and incorporate all or one of the benefits highlighted. Once designs have been completed, pupils can display them in the front window of their home to support the use of sustainable travel modes and reduce car use. Photographs of displayed posters need to be sent in to schools so that they can be entered in to the competition.
Each school will be required to run the competition and choose its own top 3 winning designs during Lockdown. The Better By … team will select the final winner for each school from these entries. In addition the school will receive:
We are looking for simple, bold, eye catching designs (A4) sized. The deadline for schools to submit all their entries (by email) to Sustainable Travel Officer Ramandeep.Gogna@slough.gov.uk will be 29th May 2020 by 3pm.
