Local highways maintenance challenge fund

Langley Interchange footbridges, Junction 5 of the M4

An application has been made to the Department for Transport for approximately £350,000 to help fund repairs to the footbridges at the Langley Interchange.

The main purpose of the scheme is to maintain a pedestrian and cycle access route at the M4 junction 5 interchange and prevent a road closure to the whole interchange. The scheme will provide economic, environmental and social benefits.

The footbridges provide the only designated crossing point at the interchange with no other safe means for crossing. Accidents have occurred in the past when pedestrians have attempted to cross the interchange without using the footbridge.

The footbridge has been damaged by strikes from vehicles and the bearings and wooden parapets have degenerated, with some now missing.
