What is a Notice of Marriage / Civil Partnership?

It is a legal requirement which you must complete at least 29 days before your marriage or civil partnership ceremony.

If you are a foreign Non UK or EU National holding Indefinite Leave To Remain and are resident in the UK or you are a Non UK or EU National coming into the UK with a marriage / CP visa, your notice of marriage will not be referred to the Home Office.

If you are a foreign Non UK or EU National either resident in the UK or coming into the UK with any other type of visa or no visa, your notice of marriage will be referred to the Home Office who will be able to increase this period to 70 days if they wish to do further investigations.

Giving notice involves you and your partner making an appointment to attend the Register Office to give your legal intention to marry to the superintendent registrar.
