Food waste recycling is now available to all Slough homes
Did you know around a third of the rubbish in your grey bin is food waste?
All households across Slough can now recycle their food waste at the kerbside through a weekly collection service.
After a successful trial in five areas of the borough, the service was rolled out in phases between November and January and is now fully in place for all residents.
What you should have received
Houses and properties with individual bins should now have an:
- indoor caddy
- outdoor caddy.
Flats with communal collections should now have:
- an indoor caddy for each household
- shared outdoor food waste bins (communal bins) for use by residents.
If you live in a flat
Flats are included in the service, but how you use it depends on your building:
- smaller flats may have their own 23 litre (L) outdoor caddy
- larger developments will have communal 140L food waste bins
- communal bins are for food waste only and should not be used for other types of waste.
Using your caddies
- Both caddies are lockable to help keep pests out.
- You can use any type of bag in your indoor caddy (for example carrier bags or bread bags) – no special liners are needed.
- Tie the bag and place it in your outdoor caddy or communal bin.
- Food waste is collected weekly on the same day as your usual bin collection.
If you are unsure of your collection day, please check the Find my bin day directory.
What happens to your food waste
Food waste collected in Slough is sent to a specialist facility in Surrey, where it is turned into renewable energy.
Through a process called anaerobic digestion, the waste is broken down to produce:
- biogas, which generates electricity
- biofertiliser, which is used in agriculture.
This process is more cost-effective and environmentally beneficial than disposing of food waste through incineration.
