Food waste

Food waste recycling is coming to all Slough borough homes

Did you know more than 40 per cent of all the rubbish in your grey bin is likely to be food waste?

All residents in Slough will soon be able to recycle their food waste at the kerbside with a weekly collection service.

This follows a successful trial in five areas of the borough that ran for a year.

The service will be introduced in phases. Residents in the first phase can expect their caddies to be delivered from Monday 3 November.

What you’ll receive

As the service rolls out, each household will get:

  • an indoor caddy
  • an outdoor caddy
  • a postcard with your collection start date.

The postcards feature Kit the Caddy, a friendly cartoon character who loves food waste, to encourage the whole family to get involved.

Caddy features

  • Both caddies are lockable to keep pests out.
  • You can use any type of bag in your indoor caddy, such as old carrier bags or bread bags – no special bags are needed.
  • Indoor caddy bags can be tied up and placed directly into the outdoor caddy, reducing smell and mess.
  • Outdoor caddies will be collected weekly on the same day as your red or grey bins, making recycling simple and convenient for everyone.

If you are unsure of your bin collection day, visit our bin collections page to find out.

How the roll out works

The service will be introduced according to the council’s refuse collection rounds, not by geographical area. Your postcard will confirm your collection start date.

Flats with communal bins will join the service in April.

  • November: 5,300 houses
  • December: 5,300 houses
  • January: 10,000 houses
  • February: 10,000 houses
  • March: 10,000 houses
