Household items accepted at Chalvey Household Waste Recycling Centre

A list of all the household items you can throw away at the Chalvey Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Automotive

  • Car batteries – a maximum of 2 a year.
  • Engine oil – a maximum of 10 litres per year.
  • Tyres - a maximum of 5 per year. After this, a charge of £5 per tyre applies.

Coffee pods

  • Please keep plastic and aluminium pods separate, there are containers for each type of pod.

DIY waste

DIY waste from small scale projects carried out by the householder can be brought to the Chalvey Household Waste and Recycling Centre up to 4 times a month for free. Beyond this, you will be charged.

You can dispose of the following for free:

  • one large item of DIY waste (2m x 0.75m x 0.7m) (about the size of a bath tub or a shower screen)
  • two lots of 50 litre bags worth of DIY waste.

Electrical - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)

  • Batteries (all household battery types)
  • Fluorescent tubes – a maximum 4 fluorescent tubes per year
  • Fridges, freezers and other large domestic appliances
  • Low energy light bulbs
  • Toasters, kettles and other small electrical appliances
  • Printer ink and toner cartridges
  • Smoke Detectors (non-ionising)
  • Televisions and monitors.

Glass

  • Bottles and jars.

Hazardous waste

All chemicals must be in their original containers or clearly marked. 

  • Aerosols.
  • Asbestos - please note restrictions apply.
  • Bleach, de-scalers, oven cleaners and other strong cleaners and disinfectants.
  • Car maintenance products (i.e. antifreeze, brake fluid, lubricants, degreaser).
  • Drain cleaners.
  • Fire extinguishers and gas bottles.
  • Glues, adhesives, and stain removers.
  • Knives (wrap them in paper and put in the scrap metal container).
  • Paint, paint cleaners and thinners, and paint products (those with an orange and black hazard symbol).
  • Pesticides and Insecticides (i.e. weed killer, lawn treatments, fungicides).
  • Photographic chemicals.
  • Smoke detectors (ionising)
  • Thermometers.
  • Wood preservatives, treatments and varnishes.

The maximum quantity for household and garden chemicals is 5 litres (one visit per month, no return visit within 28 days).

For safety, when you arrive:

  • let staff know you want to dispose of hazardous waste
  • staff will take you to the Flambank, the hazardous chemical vault, and unlock it for you.

Metals

  • Aluminium foil, food containers and drink cans.
  • Scrap metal.

Organic waste

  • Cooking oil, garden waste, and vegetable oil.

Paper and cardboard

  • Cardboard and mixed paper and card.

Plastics

  • Bottles.
  • Pots.
  • Trays.
  • Tubs.

Textiles and clothing

Where your items can still be used, you may want to donate them to a charity shop:

  • clothing and shoes
  • mixed textiles.

Wood

  • Wooden furniture – wardrobes, tables, chairs etc.

Other recyclable waste

  • Carpet.
  • Cartons (including Tetrapak).
  • Mattresses (maximum 2 mattresses) - only one visit per month (no return visit within 28 days) is permitted. Amounts over this limit are charged at £24 per mattress.

Non-recyclable waste

  • Audio and video cassettes, CDs and DVDs.
  • Books.
  • Bulky domestic items such as furniture.

Non-recyclable items can also be sent for incineration at Lakeside Electricity from Waste (EfW).
