Highways maintenance funding

Our highway network

The Highways Act 1980 sets out the main duties of Highway Authorities in England and Wales. In particular, Section 41 imposes a duty “to maintain the highway maintainable at public expense”. Slough as the Highway Authority maintains the following lengths of road/footway etc in the borough.

Other infrastructure maintained at public expense

The council in addition to maintaining the public highway is also responsible for maintaining infrastructure which is list below. Some structures such as railway bridges are managed collaboratively with Network Rail so that safety inspections and repairs are annually undertaken, this is to ensure that safety of rail and highway users is maintained.

Many users of the highway will have noticed that some of our roads have deteriorated in recent years following the financial difficulties the council has had. It is the intention now for the service to treat the affected roads as efficiently as possible and to ensure that the public purse gets value for money.

The council’s highway team are working with our contractors to get our roads back to a good standard as soon as possible. To try and get the least amount of disruption the Highways service are also working with the major projects team to ensure as many defects as possible are picked up within the scope of the following schemes:

  • A4 cycleway
  • A4 safer roads
  • Destination farnham road
  • Stoke regeneration works.

This will enable the council’s own revenue funds to go further and to be spent on other critical parts of the highway network.

The attached report sets out our approach to the 25/26 financial year and includes work undertaken in previous years.
