Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse is any sexual activity without your consent. It is always wrong and against the law.
Types of sexual abuse
Sexual Harassment
Unwanted sexual behaviour that:
- Violates your dignity or
- Creates a scary, upsetting, or offensive environment
It can happen anywhere, including:
- At work
- In schools
- On public transport
- On the streets
- In social situations
- Online (e.g. messages, photos, or videos)
Examples:
- Flashing or showing private parts
- Sexual comments or gestures
- Threatening or obscene phone calls
- Online harassment
Sexual Violence
This involves any non-consensual physical sexual act, often with aggression or force.
Sexual Assault
Touching someone in a sexual way without their consent.
This includes:
- Groping
- Fondling
- Forced kissing
You don’t need to be physically injured for it to be assault.
Rape
Rape is when someone carries out sexual intercourse or penetration without consent.
Who are the perpetrators?
People who commit these acts can be:
- Strangers
- Family members
- Friends
- Intimate partners
- Acquaintances
Most victims know the person who harmed them.
