High Street Langley highway widening and junction signalisation

The scheme

The Langley High Street widening scheme will future proof the area in preparation for the closure of Hollow Hill Lane due to Network Rail infrastructure changes. It is also a continuation of works completed in spring 2020 to introduce a traffic signal junction and pedestrian facilities at the Harrow Market.

The funding for this part of the scheme was allocated to the council by the Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The improvements are being implemented as part of a wider programme of works aimed at:

  • reducing congestion
  • improving air quality
  • providing better public transport links.

A series of online consultations were held in August 2020 with residents and other statutory consultees who were canvassed. This included the Local Access Forum groups, councillors and consultee list.  The online consultation was attended by 42 consultees. In addition, 16 responses were received via Survey Monkey and one via Transport for Slough email.

The majority of respondents chose option A from two presented. Option A included a central reservation with planting. The plans have progressed on option A.

The work includes:

  • creation of four lanes of traffic between Harrow Market and Elmhurst Rd
  • a new traffic signal junction at Meadfield Rd, incorporating pedestrian crossing movements and intelligent traffic signals
  • new Puffin crossing for pedestrians to cross the High St between Elmhurst Rd and Willoughby Rd
  • new home for Langley Millennial Monument (under discussion)
  • new shared-use permissive path running north-south on the eastern side of Langley Memorial Ground
  • an extension to the 20mph speed limit
  • new limited waiting bay on Elmhurst Rd
  • landscaping and tree replacement work on eastern side of Langley Memorial ground.

The picture shows a map on Langley High Street and immediate area either side of the road.

Langley High Street is running north to south with Langley Memorial Park on the left and Meadfield Road, Willoughby Road and Elmhurst Road as well as the parade of shops, on the right.

The picture shows how the stretch of road will become four lanes with new pedestrian crossing at Meadfield Road which will be junction controlled by traffic lights.

It also shows the entrance and exit of Willoughby Road and Elmhurst Road will be raised and between the four lanes of traffic will be a central island to provide street scaping improvements which the potential to plant trees.

Langley Memorial Park will be changed with new accessible footpaths into, and running along the perimeter of the new edge of the park.
