Becoming a childminder

A career in home-based care and becoming a Childminder can be very rewarding, whatever your background or age.

There will always be demand for good quality home-based care to support early education for young children. A career in early years could be for you if you:

  • are committed to give them the best possible start in life.

You'll need a range of skills and qualities to support children's learning and development such as:

There are plenty of opportunities to train and work towards professional qualifications to further enhance your career path.

Following the Spring 2023 Budget, a government grant is now available for new childminder registrations.

Childminders:

  • provide a home from home environment to care for children
  • enjoy flexible working and a good work life balance, meeting the needs of their own family
  • develop a fulfilling career, caring and meeting the needs of children with opportunities to gain professional qualifications
  • are self-employed and run their own business choosing the hours they wish to work.
