Childminding

Your home and transport

I live in a flat and don’t have access to a garden or any outside space. 

You can register as a childminder if you live in a flat.  If you have no access to an outside play area, you will need to ensure you plan for and take children outdoors for activities daily, such as to the local park.

I live in a rented property

You can register as a childminder if you live in rented accommodation, however you will need to seek the consent of your Landlord or Lettings Agent to run a business from the premises.

I don’t drive and rely on public transport.  Can I take children out on trips?

Taking children out on trips using public transport offers unique learning opportunities for children to experience.  You will need to obtain parent / carer written consent, to do so.

Your life and family

Can I have my own child/ren with me whilst minding other people’s children?

Childminding offers a unique opportunity to work around the needs of your family with flexibility to have your own children with you whilst minding other people’s children.

I don’t have any children of my own, would this prevent me from being a Childminder?

Not having your own children would not prevent you from registering as a childminder. 

Depending on individual circumstances, you may need to undertake some training so you can demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the EYFS, including how to implement it as part of your registration.

I’m only interested in looking after older children.  Can I still register as a childminder or is it just for those wishing to care for younger children?

When registering you can choose which ages and registers you wish to join.  If you only wish to care for older children, you can register on the Childcare Register.

I have a disability, would that prevent me from childminding?

To register with Ofsted or a Childminder Agency you will need to complete a Health Declaration providing information on your general health and any disability you may have.  Depending on the nature of your disability, a decision would be made as to your suitability for registration as a childminder.

Is childminding for women only, can men apply too?

Both men and women are welcome to apply for registration as a childminder.  Slough has a number of men working within the Early Years sector, which includes male childminders.

I’m part of the LGBTQ community, would I be considered suitable for registration?

Slough is a diverse, multicultural community and applications for registration are welcome from all areas of the community. 

Other work and childminding

Can I register as a childminder but continue with my main employment?

If you have time within your working week and are looking to take on some additional part-time work, Childminding offers an opportunity for flexible working and therefore can fit in around other work commitments.

I’m a Teaching Assistant in a school.  Can I register as a childminder but only care for older children before or after school and during school holidays?

Childminders are self-employed and arrange their own working times to care for children.  This includes only providing care before and after school, during school holidays, weekends and ad hoc childcare for shift workers.
