Noise complaints

Firework noise

Fireworks can only be let off between the hours of 7am and 11pm. The national law for fireworks means on the following festivals, fireworks can be let off for a longer time:

  • Bonfire Night (5 November): until midnight
  • Diwali (main day of celebration only): until 1am the following morning
  • New Years Eve (31 December): until 1am the following morning
  • Chinese New Year (main day of celebration only): until 1am the following morning.

For the dates of Diwali and Chinese New year celebrations, see our advice to fireworks sellers page.

If fireworks are being let off at any other times, you must contact the Police by phone on 101 or through the Police website.

As fireworks noise is usually short in duration from several properties at a time and normally on one night, it can be difficult to find the noise maker.  This makes it nearly impossible for the council to take action.

We advise that you go to a professional display and do not let fireworks off at home. If you do decide to use fireworks, it is recommended you follow the fireworks code and read the instruction for safe use.

To reduce your risk of causing a nuisance:

  • give your neighbours a few days notice of your fireworks display - particularly if they are elderly, have children or pets
  • use appropriate fireworks - when buying fireworks make sure they are right for your private space
  • make sure pets and other animals are safely away from fireworks
  • think about the timing - if you are using fireworks for a celebration, a Friday or Saturday is preferable and earlier in the day
  • if a neighbour complains that you are disturbing them or their pets, be considerate.
