Register a stillbirth

What to expect at your appointment

The registrar will ask you the:

  • date and place of death
  • full name and surname that you wish to name the child (if any)
  • full names of the parents
  • parents’ place of birth, date of birth and occupation
  • parents’ home address or addresses.

What you will need to do

Once the registration has been completed, the registrar will ask you to check that all the details are correct.

You should check the information very carefully.

Once you have checked it, you will need to sign the registration.

Stillbirth certificate

The registrar will normally issue you with a stillbirth certificate. You can use this to make the funeral arrangements.

You will not be issued a certificate if a post-mortem was needed, because the coroner will issue the certificate.

A stillbirth certificate is free. If you need any copies, these will cost £11 each.
